Webinar: HR in China – Recruiting and HR Management

996 – this number inspires admiration in many companies, but not so in China. In China, 996 is considered the unwritten law of major tech companies: Employees are working from nine in the morning until nine in the evening – six days a week. Many tech entrepreneurs, like Alibaba´s Jack Ma in a Chinese Weibo post, praise 996 as a guarantee for company’s productivity and competitiveness. But many Chinese employees are unwilling to put up with this work culture any longer. And they have a powerful argument on their side: Chinese law lets employees decide whether they want to work more than 40 hours a week. Article 36 of the Chinese labor law wants to cap the weekly workload at 44 hours. In terms of law, Chinese employees are no less protected than their counterparts in the West. The 996 discussion, however, shows: law and reality are not always the same thing in China.

We are hosting the webinar „HR in China – Personalsuche und Personalmanagement“ on June 6. The webinar explains how the Chinese labor market works in real life and outlines the difficulties and competition international companies are facing in the Chinese labour market. We are pleased to announce our guest speaker, Dr. Manuel Vermeer. Mr. Vermeer has many years of experience in consulting companies on strategic management, staff management, recruitment and intercultural topics. He heads a consultancy with focus on China, India and Germany. Mr. Vermeer is a professional interpreter, writer and university lecturer on Sino-German economic relations. He published the following novels about Chinese and Indian culture: Mit dem Wasser kommt der Tod (2015), Das Jahr des Hahns (2017), Tod am Taj Mahal (2018). In the first part of the webinar, Mr. Vermeer answers one of the biggest questions for international companies in China: How to recruit qualified workers in China?

Manuela Reintgen is senior manager for business development and marketing at ECOVIS Beijing. She has worked for more than seven years for private and public insitutions in China. In the webinar´s second part, Ms. Reintgen introduces the tenets of Chinese labor law. Her presentation will illuminate how to draft and how to terminate employment contracts as well as non-wage labor costs. Based on her professionel experiences, Ms. Reintgen will introduce some important ongoing trends of the development of human resource management in China. Finally, she explains how companies should adapt to the regulatory framework of compliance management in China.

About the Speakers

Manuela Reintgen

Senior Manager Business Development

Heading our Business Development and Marketing department, Manuela lived and worked in China from 2009 to 2017 and currently advises clients in- and outside of China from our Heidelberg office. She holds a diploma in Chinese, French and Law and has worked for several private and governmental institutions in both Germany and China before joining ECOVIS Beijing. Her focus is on foreign direct investment into China, she advises our clients on all aspects of establishing and doing business in China. Manuela is well versed in tax and legal regulations as well as main challenges and pitfalls SMEs encounter whilst managing their China entity.

Dr. Manuel Vermeer

Founder and owner of Dr. Vermeer Consult

Mr. Vermeer graduated from Heidelberg University and from Shanghai University. He holds degrees in Chinese/Spanish studies and earned a PhD for his research on the special economic zone of Hainan. Since 1988, he teaches East Asian marketing as well as Chinese language, culture and economy at the East Asia Institute at the Hochschule für Wirtschaft in Ludwigshafen. Mr. Vermeer simultaneously teaches as visiting lecturer at the Private Fachhochschule Goettingen and serves as a member of ZfU Business School in Zuerich. Prior to that, he trained Chinese language translators at Mainz University in Germersheim. Mr. Vermeer gives lectures on China, India and Europe. He advises companies on China and India strategies and coaches on intercultural management and on foreign languages in business. He wrote many publications on language and culture in China and India.
